Letter called "EMERGENCY" Gan Island Post June 11th 1972 |
| Dear Ed, Being what you would call 'an old Moonie' I find all this cock and bull about the high morale of Gan very unsteady. The second day I was here I heard a Tannoy message stating that 'there was an aircraft coming in with hydraulic trouble', naturally I was very concerned, but as my job proved of no use at all to be of any aid, I stayed away. Yet on glancing out of my window I was amazed to see half of the camp had turned out on the edge of the runway. As I said previously, as I was a Moonie and had not yet read SSO's I thought it was in orders that in the case of such an emergency personnel were to go to the runway so thus I walked out. But to my sheer amazement I found smiling faces, excited chatter, and old memories of horrid scenes being talked about. Now think hard, is this what we pride our high morale over, did you not ever think of that poor pilot? Maybe a wife and a pup or two? I'm sure seeing all of you blood thirsty Gannites helped him no end. Before I joined the ranks I was an engineer with a civvy firm of crop sprayers, and once I had engine trouble - it was not very pleasant. Anyway with only eight months to do, I'll stick to your so called high morale - at least it will be something to laugh about with the folks back home.
